Library of Hex is a prototype mainly made by game developer & designer Axi* and me as Technical & VFX artist. Later the group expaned into 5, with Jasper Witten as a Prop Artist, Jurrian Steman as composer & Loran Keuning as sound designer.
The plan for Library Of Hex was an experimental roguelike deckbuilding game where you fight with words, your health is letters and you fight off sentient books as you discover the mysteries of the library the deeper you go.
Library of hex is a continued version of Last Words which was made during the Global Game Jam 2023, winning the 'Best Game' award at the Utrecht School of Arts.
As we continued this project, we pivoted to a more direct approach with words, removing the typing element and focusing on collecting words and fighting with those. Giving the player a choice between 3 words, balancing strength & defense every move.
After a year of development in our free time, combining it with full time school and internships we weren't able to realize our plan within a preferred time frame. We still believe there is potential with this concept, but with our current situation and resources the future of this project has become uncertain. A lot of what we were working on did not make this build, but there is one build we can share, which is the one we prepared for a showcase at the dutch game garden which you can download below.
During development we went through many big iterations. Here are some old screenshots:
